About Youth Allowance

Youth Allowance is a payment for young people aged 16-24 who are:

  • Studying full-time
  • Undertaking an apprenticeship
  • Looking for work
  • Sick or injured and can’t work or study

Current Payment Rates (2024)

Maximum Fortnightly Rates

Students and Job Seekers

  • Under 18, at home: $303.20
  • Under 18, away from home: $494.60
  • 18 and over, at home: $333.20
  • 18 and over, away from home: $494.60

Apprentices

  • Under 18, at home: $271.70
  • Under 18, away from home: $494.60
  • 18 and over: $494.60

Income Test

Your Income

  • $150 per fortnight - no effect on payment
  • Above $150 - payment reduces by 50¢ per $1 earned

Parental Income Test

If you’re under 22 and dependent:

  • $58,105 per year - no effect on payment
  • Above this amount - payment may be reduced

Partner Income Test

If you have a partner:

  • $1,165 per fortnight - no effect on payment
  • Above this amount - payment may be reduced

Assets Test

Asset Limits

  • Homeowner: $301,750
  • Non-homeowner: $543,750
  • Above these limits: no payment

Eligibility Requirements

Age Requirements

  • 16-24 years old for most circumstances
  • 25-65 if you’re an Australian Apprentice

Study Requirements

  • Enrolled in an approved course
  • Studying full-time (unless exempt)
  • Making satisfactory progress

Residence Requirements

  • Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category visa holder
  • Living in Australia during your studies
